How to Choose a Cashier Device for Your Store: A POS Hardware Guide
The cashier is the first thing your customer meets in your store, and choosing the right one saves you queue time, counting mistakes and stock problems. This guide helps you pick the right POS device for your business and gives you a checklist to use before you buy.
1. Start from your type of business
- Supermarkets and grocery stores: a fast barcode scanner, a barcode scale for produce and meat, and a label printer for prices.
- Fashion, mobile phone and perfume stores: a touchscreen cashier, a barcode scanner, a receipt printer and a cash drawer.
- Gold shops: a device that runs software that records weight and karat, such as Walan Gold.
- Exhibitions, sales reps and delivery: a mobile POS device with a built-in printer and a battery that lasts the whole day.
2. Know the parts of a POS setup
| Device | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cashier (touchscreen) | Runs the sales software and records invoices. |
| Barcode scanner | Scans products quickly instead of typing them in. |
| Receipt printer | Prints the sales invoice with its QR code. |
| Cash drawer | Holds cash and opens automatically on a sale. |
| Barcode printer | Prints price and barcode labels for products. |
| Barcode scale | Weighs the product and prints a label with the price. |
| Customer display | Shows the customer the items and the total during the sale. |
3. Check it works with your software and e-invoicing
The device alone isn't enough. It needs to run cashier software that is compliant with ZATCA e-invoicing Phase 1 and Phase 2, and that connects to your inventory and accounts so your reports are right. Ask the seller: has the device been tested with the software, and who handles installation and setup?
4. Payment methods
Make sure the point of sale accepts cash, cards, mada and Apple Pay, and that the software records each payment method separately so closing the till at the end of the day is easy.
5. Warranty, maintenance and support
Choose a supplier near you with a clear warranty, spare parts, maintenance and technical support that answers when you need it — when the cashier stops, sales stop.
- Does the device suit your sales volume and number of tills?
- Does it run e-invoicing-compliant software?
- Do you need a barcode scale or a label printer?
- Does the price include installation and training?
- How long is the warranty, and who handles maintenance?
